How to Get from Rome to Florence by Train
There are 52 trains a day from Rome to Florence. The Euro Star only takes 1 Hr & 35 Min. Take a look at the web site for the Italian State Railways Trenitalia. Remember book early, at least several days before you wish to leave on the Euro Star. You can reserve at the Rome Termini station or many travel agencies around town. You can click on agencies and then click on the map at Rome and it will list them for you. Cost is about $45.
Trains designated “ES” are Eurostar Italia. They are high speed first class trains and you do need reservations. If a train is designated “IC” it is an Inter City and you do not need reservations. If a train is designated “E” it is called Express and you do not need reservations. Eurostars have non-smoking compartments, are air-conditioned and are very comfortable. The Intercity trains often are not so comfortable. The locals may make several stops along the way and take an hour or so longer but are cheaper.
How to Get from Florence Train Station into Florence
The main station is Firenze Santa Maria Novella on the edge of the historic old town. Other small stations are Firenze Campo Marte (near Florence Stadium) and Firenze Rifredi. If you take an Intercity train to Florence, you may need to change at Rifredi for another train to Firenze S.M.N. The transfer between stations via train is usually already covered by your train ticket (to check for this, your train ticket should not differentiate between the Florence train stations and will simply say “Firenze”). If you happen to have a long wait for the transferring train, it is also possible to take a bus to the city centre, but this is probably not covered by your train ticket.
How to Get from Rome to Florence by Car
Although you don’t need a car in Florence, you may want to explore Tuscany by car. The A1 Autostrada (toll road) connects Rome to Florence. Car rentals are available in Florence if you prefer to take the train and pick up a car there later.
You can also book a Limo Service to Florence.
